HON 3000 and Detroit Fellows Tutoring Project

Hello all,

I hope you are having a wonderful summer, either productive or relaxing, or if you are very lucky, both.

I am writing to remind you now, as you continue to register for the fall semester, that you may contact me with any questions you have about the HON 3000 requirement. We encourage you to meet this Service Learning requirement in your sophomore year. You can find a list of approved fall co-requisites for HON 3000 at http://www.honors.wayne.edu/slcourses.php.

One of the classes on the list for the fall is the Detroit Fellows Tutoring Project (CRN 22839). The Tutoring Project is more than a class – in fact many students who’ve become a part of the Project describe it as a transformative experience. While they go into the class ready to offer help to the students that they tutor, they are usually surprised to find out that they receive more than they offer including: firsthand knowledge about literacy issues, respect and admiration from their students, a better understanding of the community in which WSU is located, and a personally enriching experience.

Tutors will work at 1 of 7 elementary schools: Harms, Maybury, Roberto Clemente, Mae C. Jemison, Golightly, Loving and Spain. Information about the schools is provided at the Orientation session and tutors are requested to select the school they wish to service. At these sessions the tutors provide the times they will be available and tutoring schedules are made for them by the local school coordinator based on this information.

While students also meet in seminars with other tutors and project coordinators during the school year, the majority of the course hours are made up of tutoring time. In the past, students have often worked out carpooling arrangements with other tutors. For those students planning to enter the College of Education Level 2, this course will fulfill the requirement of 40 hours of group work experience with children. And of course, Honors students will be able to co-register for their HON 3000 Service Learning graduation requirement.

I hope this spotlight on one HON 3000 approved course helped answer some of your questions about the Detroit Fellows Tutoring Project. If you have any other questions please feel free to contact me or to email detroitfellows@wayne.edu.

Best,
