Honors Digest: January 16, 2009

Good morning!, originally uploaded by Kodamakitty.

Hello Honors Students;

Happy New Year (give or take two weeks)! I am sorry I've haven't been updated as often as I like, but I have been thinking of you. Hope you had a great winter break and that your first week of classes is off to a flying start. It's super cold outside, so throw another log on the fire of knowledge, grab your Snuggie ("the blanket with sleeves!"), and settle in for another edition of the Honors Digest!

Liza
(the Honors Advisor)

In this edition:
1. Detroit Fellows Tutoring Project - there's still time to sign up!
2. New Honors Option form, effective Winter 2009
3. *Hey Seniors!* Applying for 2009 Graduation
4. Spring/Summer 2009 Schedule of Classes on the web, Tuesday, January 20
5. Meeting with Liza during Winter and Spring/Summer term

1. Detroit Fellows Tutoring Project - there's still time to sign up!

Detroit Fellows Tutoring Project - CRN 22839 - check out www.honors.wayne.edu/detroitfellows.php for updated information
Earn 2 to 4 Honors credit hours while teaching reading skills to children in kindergarten through fourth grade who need additional help in Detroit Public Schools. This is a special opportunity for Honors Program students and is open to all majors.

Detroit Fellows work three (earns 2 credits), five (earns 3 credits) or seven (earns 4 credits) hours per week at the school. The schedule is established by you based on your availability and the number of credits for which you sign up. Tutors work during regularly scheduled school hours: 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

2. New Honors Option form, effective Winter 2009

We have revamped (and hopefully simplified) the Honors Option instructions and form that you may now find online at: http://www.honors.wayne.edu/pdfs/honors_option_form.pdf

If you have paper copies of the Honors Option form, please replace them with the 2009 version. Older versions will not be accepted for review. The deadline for submitting an Honors Option proposal has been moved to the end of the fourth week of classes, which is Friday, February 6, 2009.

3. **Hey Seniors!** Applying for 2009 Graduation

Many of you have sent e-mail messages asking about applying for graduation, how to walk at commencement and what to do if you still have a class or two to take over the summer. There is a ton of information on the University's Commencement website: http://commencements.wayne.edu/index.php

Here are the pertinent deadlines:
FRIDAY, February 6, 2009: Deadline to apply for degree certification if all your requirements will be complete at the end of Winter 2009 term. Your name will be included in the commencement booklet in May. Apply via Pipeline under the Student Tab.

FRIDAY, March 13, 2009: Deadline to apply for spring/summer term degree certification and to have your name included in the May commencement booklet. The deadline for applying for spring/summer degree certification for students who do not wish to participate in commencement (unsolicited advice - check with your family first) is June 5, 2009. Apply via Pipeline under the Student Tab.

Honors students graduating with department and/or University Honors will be contacted about an Honors stole to wear with your cap and gown for commencement. There are no cords from the Honors College for graduating with distinction (cum laude, summa cum laude, magna cum laude).

Please remember that you must complete all of your required Honors courses and have a minimum 3.30 WSU GPA to graduate with department and/or University Honors (some departments may have a higher GPA requirement).

Also watch this space for more information about applications to the David Mackenzie Honor Society (DMHS). Induction into DMHS is a recognition of high academic achievement and contributions to the Wayne State campus community. It's a great opportunity to network with successful alumni and connect to the University each year at our annual reunion. Applications are open to any student graduating in Fall 2008, Winter 2009 or Spring/Summer 2009

4. Spring/Summer 2009 Schedule of Classes on the web, Tuesday, January 20

Spring/summer 2008 registration begins on Monday, February 9. There is no Honors Priority registration for the spring/summer term. You will find very few Honors offerings for the spring/summer, but most departments tend to offer the Thesis and Directed Study courses.

We usually offer one Honors 4200-level seminar for the Spring session (May 6 - June 30). Details have not yet been finalized, so as soon as I have a CRN, I'll let you know in an upcoming Digest.

For other important dates and a link to the Registration calendar, please visit: http://sdcl.wayne.edu/RegistrarWeb/Calendars/academic
