Hello Honors Students!

I am currently e-mailing you from a conference in Indianapolis, Indiana! Thanks to the wonders of the internet, I send you a few important tidbits before Honors Pre-registration begins on Wednesday, October 29. Hopefully this will be more useful than one of those souvenir snowglobes or refrigerator magnets!

I'll be back in the office on Thursday, October 30, but in the meantime, in this edition of the Honors Digest:
1. Honors Pre-Registration for Winter 2009
2. IDR Honors College on the world wide web
3. Late night Tuesdays in the Honors HQ
4. E-mailing/appointments with Liza and affiliated UAC Advisors

See you soon,
Liza

1. Honors Pre-Registration for Winter 2009
One of the major perqs of being in good standing in the Honors College is the ability to register before Priority Registration for fall and winter terms. For Winter 2009, Honors Pre-Registration will be available October 29, 30 and 31, 2008. On October 29, Pre-Registration will begin at 9:00 am. On October 30 and 31, Pre-Registration will begin at 7:00 am. During Honors Pre-Registration, you will not need to have the Honors classes unlocked. Honors sections are available on a first-come, first-served basis. I am working on having a compiled list posted on honors.wayne.edu.

Any Honors sections that usually require permission to register are open for Honors students. You will not need to have Honors sections unlocked during Honors Pre-Registration. Also, there are nine sections of Honors PHI 1100. PHI 1100 will fulfill both Philosophy and Letters (PL) and Ethical Issues in Society (EI) for all students with the exception of Engineering majors, who will need to take PHI 1120.

Starting November 6, all requests for Honors sections must be sent to honors@wayne.edu. Please include your name, WSU ID and the CRN of the Honors section(s) you wish to take. You will receive an auto-reply, followed by a confirmation e-mail that the block has been lifted.

Honors sections are usually clearly marked in the Schedule of Classes, but in the meantime, here a few things to look for:
• In the Schedule of Classes, there is usually a gray banner for the Honors section. However, that gray bar only applies to either the section directly above or below the bar - be sure to look for the repeated five-digit CRN.
• Honors sections have a three-digit section number that begins with a 5 (e.g., 501, 502, etc.)
• There is usually a bright yellow "Permission Required" flag, though this does get used by other departments as well.

You may also find the following websites useful:
• Instructions on how to register: http://sdcl.wayne.edu/RegistrarWeb/RegSch/reginstruct (also available in the Honors Orientation handbook from the summer)
• WSU Pipeline, http://www.pipeline.wayne.edu
• Schedule of Classes online, http://www.classschedule.wayne.edu.
• University Advising website, http://www.advising.wayne.edu > Current Students > Requirements and Testing > General Education requirements. These worksheets list the approved courses for fulfilling the General Education Requirements based on program or college. For Business, Education and Engineering, please visit your college websites.
• The Undergraduate Bulletin list classes required by your major as well as course descriptions. The Undergraduate Bulletin is online at http://www.bulletins.wayne.edu > Undergraduate Bulletin.

3. Late night Tuesdays in the Honors HQ
You may have already noticed the change in office hours on our front door, but the Honors HQ is now open late on Tuesdays until 8:00 pm. Whether or not we decide to stay open late one night a week or even expand our hours to other evenings will be based on whether or not students seem to be using the space, so come on by!

4. E-mailing/appointments with Liza and affiliated UAC Advisors

For Business, Education, and Engineering majors or for questions specific to your major, please visit your department advisor.

For everyone else:
As I mentioned in a previous Honors Digest, we have partnered with three University Advising Center (UAC) advisors to assist you with the University General Education requirements when I am not available. They can also set up the Declaration of Major and Degree Audit paperwork. If you declare your major and need a signature from me for University Honors, stop by my office during my open hours or ask one of the peer advisors to obtain my signature for you.

Appointments may be scheduled with Ms. Bernas, Mr. Douglas or Ms. Gurney through the Honors office - stop by 2100 UGL to set up the appointment or be sure to stop by prior to your appointment if you set it up by phone. You will be given an appointment card with the name of your UAC advisor and the time and date of your appointment. Please bring a copy of your Pipeline transcript and a folder with our previous meetings notes, just in case.

If you have a quick question or a question about Honors requirements, please stop by during my open hours on most Mondays between 9 - noon and 1 - 4. You may also e-mail me at honors@wayne.edu.

I will be available for general advising appointments during the winter and spring/summer semesters. Thank you for your patience and understanding!

As much as possible we will do our best to keep these broadcasts to a minimum for announcements that are not directly through Honors, but that we feel are excellent opportunities for our students. If you have any ideas, questions, or items for the weekly Honors Digest, please e-mail us at honors@wayne.edu
